Will the third time be the charm?
The Metro Council held a special called meeting Monday night to take a second vote on the question of sales tax. The council wants to put a referendum on the November ballot to raise sales tax in Moore County from 9.50% to 9.75%. The raise amounts to 25 cents on a $100 purchase With John Taylor and Houston Lindsey absent, the vote was taken. The measure passed 12-1 with Sunny Rae Moorehead voting against. The council then voted on the language for the ballot, which passed as well.
Is this bridge really safe?
There has been a lot of discussion lately about the bridge at the Retreat at Whiskey Creek, specifically regarding its safety. The short answer to the question is “No.” In addition to the questionable assessment of the bridge and the ensuing fallout, the bridge is showing signs of wear and tear. There is damage to some of the bridge deck boards, with some of those boards being split and broken. This is without the kind of traffic load that would be expected from the completed development. It seems that that kind of damage at this point would be a cause for concern.
Sheriff begins new term at full speed
Sheriff Tyler Hatfield is starting off his new term full speed ahead. More accurately, he never slowed down for the election. One big item on his plate is the jail renovation, with work to begin on September 7. Currently, he is sourcing the new kitchen appliances, and hunting down the best prices.
Cashions honored by School Board
Mr. Ed Cashion and Mrs. Jammie Cashion were honored by the Moore County School Board at the board’s August meeting. Director of Schools Chad Moorehead presented each with a certificate honoring their 12 years of service on the School Board. They were also presented with lifetime passes to all Moore County’s sports’ home games. Both Cashions started serving on the School Board in the fall of 2014.

Sales tax referendum planned for November ballot
Metro Council discussed whether or not to try once again to pass a $.0025 sales tax increase on the November ballot at Monday’s meeting. That would raise Moore County’s sales tax to 9.75%, the same as every county surrounding Moore County. If passed, the tax increase would amount to an extra quarter on a $100 purchase.
