The Moore County Raiders head to Huntland tonight in hopes of bringing home the Majors Cup after dropping their tilt against Battle Creek last week.

Big plays cost the Moore County Raiders Friday as they fell to Battle Creek 27-15 in Lynchburg.

The game opened with hope as the Raiders took the ball and marched down the field like they meant it, churning up 68 yards thanks to a big run by Drew Hardison, before planting the pigskin at the 2-yard-line. However, as if hitting a force field, the Raiders went backwards from that point and were unable to get to the Promised Land, rebuffed on fourth down on their opponent’s 2-yard-line.

Battle Creek made the hosts pay as they were dancing in the other endzone 98 yards away two plays later on the back of two big plays. The score was 7-0 with 4:36 to go in the first.

Moore County was unable to do another with the ball on their next possession and had to give it back to Battle Creek. The Grizzlies wasted no time in putting up another TD, making it 14-0.

Moore County then posted a good drive but a unsportsmanlike flag stopped the march in its tracks. The Grizzlies once again took little time on the offensive end as running back C.J. Naggy broke a pair of tackles and scampered 50 yards for a Battle Creek TD. The score stood at 20-0 at the break.

Things could have gotten very had at the beginning of the third quarter when Battle Creek returned the ball all the way to pay dirt. However, a flag took the points off the board. Battle Creek would later make good on a special teams play, returning a punt to the house to make it 27-0.

Freshman Quarterback Austin Scherff was able to take the ball into the endzone later in the half to make the count 27-7. He would score his second TD of the night with just under two minutes left in the game.

With the loss, the Raiders head to Huntland to play the Hornets for the Major’s Cup this Friday. The Hornets beat Richland 17-15 and are 3-1. The Raiders are 1-3.
