Sales tax referendum planned for November ballot
Metro Council discussed whether or not to try once again to pass a $.0025 sales tax increase on the November ballot at Monday’s meeting. That would raise Moore County’s sales tax to 9.75%, the same as every county surrounding Moore County. If passed, the tax increase would amount to an extra quarter on a $100 purchase.

Early voting is in, final vote is today
E arly voting for the Moore County August General Election is complete, and today wraps up final voting. According to Administrator of Elections James Sanders, the early voting numbers came in at 1,234 votes cast, which is slightly less than the 2022 early voting figure of 1,273.

Water loss numbers improve significantly
After fighting water losses that hovered near 50% for the past several years, The Metro Utility Board got some welcome news at the July meeting. June’s water losses came in at 29.82%, well below the state’s 40% acceptable number.
Women of Wartrace, taking care of business
Anyone taking a trip to Wartrace who hasn’t been there lately is going to notice some big changes. Almost every storefront on the square and adjacent street is now open for business. Notably, every one of those businesses are owned and operated by women, and they are revitalizing the city.
Voluntary Pre-K needs students
Director of Schools Chad Moorehead advised the school board at July’s meeting that Moore County’s free Pre-K class is in danger of losing funding this year. The state pays $89,053 for the class, and the district pays the remaining $45,000. The state funding is, however, dependent on the class having 90% of the children at four years of age. For the class of 20 students, this works out to 18 students.
