School Board prioritizes projects

Director of Schools Chad Moorehead addressed the School Board regarding several projects that need to be addressed in Moore County Schools at August’s board meeting. The first concerned the bathrooms at the “99 wing” at the elementary school. When the six classrooms were first built, each classroom had small storage closets at the back of the room. Sometime later, the small closets were converted to restrooms.

Cashions honored by School Board

Mr. Ed Cashion and Mrs. Jammie Cashion were honored by the Moore County School Board at the board’s August meeting. Director of Schools Chad Moorehead presented each with a certificate honoring their 12 years of service on the School Board. They were also presented with lifetime passes to all Moore County’s sports’ home games. Both Cashions started serving on the School Board in the fall of 2014.

Voluntary Pre-K needs students

Director of Schools Chad Moorehead advised the school board at July’s meeting that Moore County’s free Pre-K class is in danger of losing funding this year. The state pays $89,053 for the class, and the district pays the remaining $45,000. The state funding is, however, dependent on the class having 90% of the children at four years of age. For the class of 20 students, this works out to 18 students.

Director Moorehead addresses Planning Commission

Director of Schools Chad Moorehead spoke to the Planning and Zoning Commission at May’s meeting to give an update on school enrollment. Though enrollment has seen a steady increase in recent years, this year’s enrollment jumped by 44 students. Though that number may not seem like a lot, with average class sizes running between 65 and 75 students from year to year, that number is close to a whole new graduating class.
