Middle School Raiders win 12 in a row

The Moore County Middle School Raiders tamed the Cannon County Lions this week as the boys from Lynchburg notched their 11th straight win.

The fourth inning proved to be the game changer for the Raiders as they plated four runs in the bottom half of the inning to break a 1-1 tie. Hits were at a premium as both teams had four hits on the night. However, the Lions made the lion’s share of mistakes, charged with four fielding errors, double that of their hosts.

Getting hits for the Raiders were Brantly Chapin, Austin Scherff, William Thompson and Sawyer Boyce. They also spread out the RBI category as Chapin, Scherff, Thompson and Lake Wade were all credited with batting a run in.

A trio of pitchers worked the hill for Moore County with Scherff hurling the first inning, fanning three. Wade pitched the middle three innings, striking out four. Clay Moses closed the outing, fanning three over the past two innings.

Their 12th win came in a defensive 2-0 defeat of Eagleville. The Raiders outhit the Eagles 6-to-4. Austin Scherff and Sully Townes both batted in the runs for Moore County while Chapin and Scherff did the honors of plating the runs. Chapin’s run came despite him having no hits but instead became a danger on the base paths after he was walked twice by Eagle pitchers. Scherff and Scout Murray both had doubles in the win. Laken Wade and Scherff combined on the hill to fan 12 Eagles.

The Raiders now look to the playoffs this week after a 13-3 regular season in which their last loss cam March 2.
