Council approves jail renovations

Sheriff Tyler Hatfield appeared before the May Metro Council Meeting to update the members on his revisions to the quote for the jail renovations. Cuts to the original quote brought the total from $1,056,498 down to $983,498, or $833,498 if the county buys the commercial grade appliances required for the kitchen. Among the cuts were the updates to the female area.

Council member Robert Bracewell asked if the fire suppression exhaust fan could be taken out of the budget. However, that is required by the state in jail facilities, and enforced by the fire marshal.
After putting the job out for bid on several platforms, only one bid was made on the project. It was questioned whether it would be worthwhile putting it back out for bid. Part of the reduction in the quote was consideration that Adcock Construction will be working on a project with Jack Daniel’s, and so would not charge Moore County extra for supervision on the jail project. It was decided not to put the job out for bid a second time.
Sunny Moorehead made the motion to pass the $833,498 bid, with up to $150,000 allowed for the purchase of appliances, and Robert Bracewell seconded the motion. The vote then passed, with Peggy Blackburn voting “No.” The upgrades will be paid from debt service. The start date for the project is not yet set.
