Richland holds off late Raiderette run

There will be no three-peat at the state championships as the number- two ranked Richland squad shut the door on the Raiderette playoff quest, ending their season 49-40 in the second round of the regional tournament.

The win was the third this season by Richland as they continued on through the regional tournament as first seed and via the Moore County win, qualifi ed for the sectionals as the top two teams in the regionals advance to sectionals.

The Raiderettes led after the first period against Richland, 12-11 thanks in part to the hot hand of Ellie Carter who sizzled the cylinder with a pair of 3-pointers on her way to a 10-point night. Ally Sharpe notched a pair of baskets as she led her team with 20 points on the evening. Bella Tucker also added a basket.

However, the second proved to be Moore County’s demise as they were only able to put five points on the board while Richland heated up and scored 17 in the second. Sharpe hit a hoop as did Emma Dye while Ellie Carter had a free throw as the Raiderettes trailed 29-17 at the break. They were unable to cut into the Richland lead in the third even though Sharpe drained a pair of threes. The only other third quarter scoring came from Emma Dye who had a pair of free throws.

A 15-point fourth was not enough to erase the Richland lead. However, the Raiderettes went out swinging as Sharpe hit a trio of field goals and a pair of free throws. Ellie Carter finished her night with a three and Dye popped a bucket to end the night.

Their run in the regional tourney comes after the Raiderettes lost eight seniors last year to graduation after making the state championships two years in a row.
