Bulldogs beat Raiders on Senior Night

The Cornersville Bulldogs avenged their loss to Moore County last season and are now one win away from a perfect regular season after defeating the Raiders on Senior Night 28 to 6.

Most of the damage came in the first half as the Bulldogs struck on three big plays while the Raiders were able to move the ball between the 30s with ease but were unable to convert their drives into points.

The Raiders forced a Bulldog punt on the first possession of the game and started their first drive at their own 20. Tucker Smith immediately broke out two big-time runs, pushing the pigskin to midfield. He had 60 yard rushing in the first half.

From there, Jose Garcia took a pass from Austin Scherff and ran the ball to the Cornersville 30. However, a 15-yard penalty derailed the early drive as they got backed up to the 40 and had to give the ball back.

Cornersville took advantage as they broke off an 80-yard run on second-and-long, setting them up at the Raider 1-yard-line. They scored one play later to make it 6-0 at the 3:07 mark of the first.

The second Moore County drive was similar to the first as they were able to move the ball only to be faced with a third-and-24 after penalties.

The Bulldogs scored on an Eli Cook run after a short drive, making it 14-0 at the 7:36 mark of the second.

The Bulldogs were able to put up another touchdown before half, going up 21-0 at the break.

The Raiders were able to take the opening second half kickoff and push the ball past midfield but their drive stalled at the Cornersville 44. The Raiders looked to punt but the Bulldogs had too many players on the field and gave Moore a fourth-and-inches situation which Tucker Smith converted. However, Smith fumbled the ball at the 27, giving it back to Cornersville at the 7:40 mark of the third. The Raiders were able to stuff the drive and got the ball back at the Bulldog 40 after the punt but were stopped short of a first down, surrendering the ball on downs at the 3:35 mark of the third. Cornersville returned the favor on their next drive and failed on fourth down, giving the ball back to the Raiders. However, the Bulldogs were able to flip the field before giving the ball back, leaving the Raiders at their own 30.

The Raiders began the fourth quarter by getting a first down at the Bulldog 36. As had been a familiar theme on the night, the Raiders were able to push the ball near the Cornersville 30 but could go no further, giving the ball up on downs.

A long TD run by Hayden Cherry on the next play was wiped off the board by holding. The Raiders made them pay two snaps later when Caseon Ferrara picked off a pass and returned it to the Bulldog 10. Scherff was able to capitalize as he got into the endzone on a one-yard QB keeper at the 5:06 mark of the fourth. A missed extra point left the score at 21-6.

The resulting on-side kick attempt was recovered by the Bulldogs at midfield. The Bulldogs took advantage of the situation as Cameron Fitzpatrick hauled in a 47-yard pass for a touchdown on third down to make it 28-6.

The Raiders then mounted their best drive of the evening, assisted by a couple of Bulldogs penalties, putting them at the Cornersville 13 at the two-minute mark. Another pair of unsportsmanlike penalties against the Bulldogs on fourth-and-16 bailed out Moore County and brought the Raiders to the 5. However, the Raiders weren’t able to exploit their good fortune and surrendered the ball on downs.

The loss dropped the Raiders to 1-8. They will end their season Thursday when they travel to Richland.
