School Board eyes upcoming budget

April’s School Board meeting opened with 9th grade student Cale Rose making a statement to the board. Miss Rose, very active in 4-H, wished to thank the board for their continued support of 4-H and FFA activities, especially the field trips the groups take. Some trips are educational in nature, and some are for competitions. The board’s approval is required for these trips, which often result in the students’ absence from some classes. Miss Rose was 2025’s Grand Champion for the 4-H Chick Chain.
Director Chad Moorehead advised the board that Tennessee Investment in Student Achievement (TISA) funding is estimated to decrease by $11,000 for the 20262027 school year, though that figure could change. An overpayment from the state for this year’s funding of $56,000 was paid back from the fund balance. Moorehead recommended reserving 5% of any funding for the upcoming school year for the fund balance. The budget will be fully reviewed at the May meeting.
In policy reviews, there were no recommended changes to those reviewed for March. For April, the Tennessee School Boards Association (TSBA) recommended that the policy regarding public comment be changed from restricting comments to only items on the agenda to allowing public comment on any topic of concern.
The Moore County School District has posted job openings for High School Principal, Men’s and Women’s Head Basketball Coaches, Certified Teachers, Special Education Teacher, Bus Drivers, and Substitute Bus Drivers.
The Special Education bus is temporarily out of service for repairs. Special Ed students will be picked up by regular buses for the time being, as no loaner buses could be located.
