Tullahoma boy dies after being hit by vehicle

Posted on Thursday, April 25, 2013 at 3:51 pm

A 14-month-old Tullahoma boy died Tuesday afternoon after being struck by a utility vehicle in a family driveway in Moore County. He was the son of Brittany and Cody Haggard of Tullahoma.

According to Moore County Sheriff Mark Logan, Kyler Haggard was behind a vehicle in the driveway of his grandparents on Coker Road when he was struck by a van operated by Chris Reese.

According to the sheriff, the grandparents, Kenneth and Brenda Haggard, were having dry wall work performed in their house. The workers had pulled their van up close to the house to unload their materials. After the materials were unloaded, Reese got in the van to back it up in the driveway.

He told officers he thought the grandmother had taken the child inside the house, so he backed up and the van hit the boy.

The child was transported to Harton Regional Medical Center where he was pronounced dead on arrival.

According to Sheriff Logan, the child’s body was sent to the State Medical Examiner’s Office where an autopsy was to be performed. The investigation is continuing.

Sgt. Albert Carpenter of the Moore County Sheriff’s Department was the first officer on the scene. The accident also was investigated by Logan, Chief Deputy Robin Holt and Investigator Mike Rainey.

Kilgore Funeral Home will announce the funeral arrangements, which were incomplete Thursday.
