Summer camps available to keep area athletes busy

06-07-16 sports Summer Basketball CampsThere’s hardly an offseason for athletes anymore, as they are constantly working to improve their individual skills and get an edge on the competition. As student/athletes head into summer break, there are still plenty of camps in the area to help keep their mind focused and their body in shape.

There are camps scheduled in Moore County and surrounding areas for a myriad of sports and for athletes of all ages and ability, including both football and girls basketball camps at Moore County High School.

Here’s a look at what’s coming up over the next two months.

June 20-21; June 23-24

—Motlow State basketball camps

Motlow State Community College has scheduled a bevy of summer basketball camps, all open to both boys and girls ages 6-15, according to Bucks’ head coach JT Burton.

Registration flyers are available on the Motlow athletics website at <MotlowSports.com>. All camps will be held at Motlow’s Copperweld Arena inside Nisbett Center on the Moore County campus.

With the first camp wrapping up this week, the The second camp is set for June 20-21 and is a Shooting Camp June 20-21. Each day is from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. and the cost is $75. This camp will focus on all aspects of shooting technique from lay-ups to 3-point shooting to free-throw shooting.

The third camp is also in June. The Post Skills Camp is June 23-24 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. and the cost is $75. This camp will focus on every aspect of post play both offensively and defensively. Instruction will include the little things that can give a post player the competitive advantage.

June 15-17

—Fayetteville softball camp

Lady Tiger Softball Coach Melissa Good from Fayetteville High School has her youth softball camp scheduled for June 15-17 for girls ages 5 and up.

The camp will be held at Don Davidson Park from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m.

Coach Good and assistant coach Mandy Buchanan, along with FHS Lady Tigers, will conduct the camp. Hitting, bunting, infield, outfield, base running, catching and pitching for those interested will be covered.

The cost is $50 per camper. Registration forms are available at Fayetteville High School, or you can register the first morning of camp. Please arrive at 8:30 a.m. if you’re waiting to the first day of the camp to register.

June 27-29

—Motlow State softball camp

Motlow State Community College will hold its 2016 Softball Camp for children 12 years old and younger June 27-29, according to Janice Morey, Lady Bucks’ head coach.

The camp will begin each day at 9 a.m. and last until 12:30 p.m. Campers will develop fundamental skills in defense, hitting, bunting and base running.

The cost is $75 per camper. If a family has more than one child participating, the additional family members will pay only $50.

July 25-27

—Moore County girls basketball camp

The Little Raiderettes Individual Basketball Camp is scheduled for July 25-27 at Moore County High School. First year MCHS head coach Amy Josephson and her staff will host the camp for girls wanting to learn and improve on the fundamentals of basketball.

The cost is $50 per camper. The camp, which is for girls ages 5-14, runs from 8-11 a.m. daily. Each camper will receive a camp T-shirt.

July 25-28

—Motlow State basketball camp

Open to both boys and girls, Motlow State’s final basketball camp of the summer is a second Fundamental Skills Camp and runs July 25-28. Each days’ session will last from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. and the cost is $175. Fundamental Skills Camp will focus on teaching the basic fundamental skills of basketball. Campers will be grouped by age, grade and ability.
