Sergeant First Class Joshua Moon presents Dr. MaryLou Apple with a commemorative United States Flag.Sergeant First Class (SFC) Joshua Moon of Beechgrove holds the distinct honor of being the first student to graduate from Motlow College via the technology of Skype. Moon received his degree on May 2 while serving active duty in Afghanistan.

Moon recently returned home from his tour of duty and visited Motlow to meet with college officials who helped orchestrate his graduation. He presented a framed American flag and certificate of appreciation to Dr. MaryLou Apple, president of Motlow.

The certificate read in part: “The American flag flew through the skies of a free Afghanistan in a U.S. Marine Corps AV-8B Harrier…flown for Motlow State Community College. May this always serve as a reminder of America’s commitment to the defense of liberty and freedom. This flag is dedicated in appreciation for your committed support to SFC Joshua Moon during Operation Enduring Freedom, Kandahar, Afghanistan.”

Dr. Apple commended Moon for his diligence in completing his education while serving his country.  She thanked him for the flag and assured him it would hang in a place where visitors to the College could recognize its significance. •
