The search was being continued Tuesday for the body of a 26-year-old Coffee County man who authorities said drowned Monday while preparing to fish from his boat in Tims Ford Lake in the Estill Springs area.
Officials said they were withholding the victim’s name until the body is found.
According to Estill Springs Police Chief Allen Rhodes, around 11 a.m. Monday the man, accompanied by two young boys, launched his boat from the Estill Springs City Park for a day of fishing. Two other boys were waiting on the shore.
According to the chief, the boat got away from him and started to float out into the lake. The man attempted to swim out to the boat but went under the water and failed to resurface.
The two boys, who were wearing lifejackets, were able to swim to shore and contact family members who in turn called 911. According to Rhodes, the boys range in age from six to 11 years old.
“The Franklin County and Coffee County dive teams worked until 1 a.m. this morning (Tuesday) and then returned at 7:30 a.m. to resume the search,” Rhodes said Tuesday morning. In addition to the divers, members of the Estill Springs Fire Department and the Franklin County Sheriff’s Department are assisting in the search.
Late Tuesday afternoon the search was continuing for the missing man who authorities said lived in Hillsboro.
