After several months of collecting data through an online survey on the Moore County Board of Education website, Moore County Director of Schools Chad Moorehead reported at the board’s February meeting that Calendar ‘D’ was the most popular among those who participated in the survey.
Moorehead then recommended to the board that Calendar ‘D’ be adopted for the 2013-14 school year and the motion was passed without discussion.
Moorehead conducted two surveys before making his recommendation to the board. The first survey used three calendars and took input from those who participated. When the initial survey was complete, the director of schools isolated the likes and dislikes, revamped the three and narrowed them down to two calendars for a second survey.
His recommendation was based largely on the results of the final survey.
“There was not as much participation in the second survey, (but) 65 percent preferred calendar ‘D,’” Moorehead said.
The 2013-14 school year will begin on Monday, Aug. 5 for students; teachers report on Monday, July 29.
Fall Break is scheduled for Oct. 7-11 and Thanksgiving break is Nov. 25-29. Students are released for the Christmas holiday break on Friday, Dec. 20, which is an abbreviated day of school. They return from that break on Monday, Jan. 6, 2014.
Spring Break is April 14-18, and the last full day of school is Wednesday, May 21, while Friday, May 23 is an abbreviated day on the calendar. There are also eight days built into the school calendar when students are scheduled for early dismissal, which does not involve a holiday or otherwise traditional break.
Both calendar ‘C’ and calendar ‘D’ were very similar, with only subtle differences between the two. There were tweaks made from the original three surveys to help create the final two.
