The Moore County High School basketball teams had solid showings in the District 8-A tournament at Huntland and now they look to the region tournament.
The Raiderettes finished second in the district tourney, losing in a heartbreaker to host Huntland 56-54. The Raiders finished third, winning the consolation game in overtime over Cascade 70-64.
In the girls championship game, the Raiderettes led Huntland throughout the game. They held a 20-25 lead at halftime and led 43-39 heading to the final quarter but just couldn’t seal the deal over the home team.
Huntland made good use of the foul line, sinking 13-of-20 free throws. Moore County made 9-of-10.
Olivia Richards scored 15 points to lead Moore County. Chloe Brazier scored 13 points and Erica Clifton scored 10. Maecy Fletcher added eight points, Carolyna Driver six and Charlotte Ray had two points.
The Raiderettes got to the final by beating Eagleville 38-29. They rallied after being down a point heading into the fourth quarter, holding Eagleville to just two points in the period. Clifton led a balanced attack with nine points, while Brazier and Driver had eight points each. Regan Corder added with seven points, Olivia Richards scored three and Charlotte Ray chipped in one point.
That win clinched a region berth and a home game. The Raiderettes will play Friday night against STEM Prep Academy 7 p.m. in the Region 4-A Tournament quarterfinals.
Brazier, Driver and Richards made the all-tournament team. Making all-district for the season were Clifton, Driver and Richards.
The Raiders opened tournament play by beating Cornersville 69-54, then lost to tough Fayetteville City 41-36 in the semifinals. City was the eventual district tourney champ, beating Eagleville.
In the win over Cornersville, Riley Holman poured in 32 points to lead the way in a victory that locked up a region berth. Dylan Scruggs added 14 points.
In the third-place game against Cascade, Brayden Cashion tallied 27 points, making three 3-pointers, to lead the Raiders. Blake Woosley added 13 and Andrew Copeland scored 11. Holman added nine, Scruggs six, Ben Fletcher and Colton Bateman had two apiece.
Making all-tournament were Holman and Copeland. Copeland and Cashion made all-district for the season.
The Raiders will next travel to Hendersonville on Saturday to play Merrill Hyde Magnet School at 7 p.m. in the Region 4-A Tournament quarterfinals.
