CHAPEL HILL – The Moore County girls and boys basketball teams split their games at Forrest on Friday night, with the Raiderettes picking up a 45-42 win and the Raiders dropping a 52-48 decision.
Both games were close down the stretch. At Chapel Hill, Sarah Raby scored 23 points to lead the Raiderettes.
With Moore County ahead 44-42, the Lady Rockets had a chance to tie the game with 2.1 seconds remaining, but Forrest eighth-grader Caitly Yost missed the front end of a one-and-one. She then purposely missed her second attempt, but Moore County pulled in the rebound. Abby Grogan hit a free throw with 1.5 seconds left to play to seal the victory for the Raiderettes.
In the nightcap, the host Rockets used an 18-5 run to pull away from the Moore County boys in the fourth quarter. After falling behind by 12 points, 45-33, the Raiders pieced together a late rally.
Dalton Barrier nailed a 3-pointer to cut the lead to seven with 2:13 left. Two free throws by Ben Harvey pulled the Raiders to within five points, 45-40, with 2:03 remaining.
Moore County was within three points with 90 seconds left, but couldn’t convert after coming up with a loose ball.
Forrest then used a steady stream of free throws by Mark Pope to keep the Raiders at bay. Pope sank seven straight free throws in game’s final 55 seconds for the Rockets. He finished with a game-high 20 points.
Harvey led Moore County with a dozen, while Barrier added 10.
