WHEEL, Tenn. — Polesitter Ashley Newman of Ripley, Tenn., captured the first-ever United Crate Racing Alliance feature as Duck River Raceway Park drew a whopping 63 Crate Late Models for the series’ inaugural event on Saturday night. Newman pocketed $2,500 in outrunning fifth-starting Matt Henderson of Loudon, Tenn.

“First time I’ve really had the opportunity to race at Duck River and what an awesome track it is,” said the race winner. “To win any race is big, but to win a show over a field like this is something special.”

Newman stretched a personal winning streak to three; he’s won three of four starts in 2015.

Ethan Hunter finished third after starting seventh. He was just ahead of Jerry Coffman and Jake Teague in the first of a 12-race Crate Late Model Series that will be contested at Duck River Raceway Park, North Georgia Speedway in Chatsworth; 411 Motor Speedway in Seymour, Tenn.; Cleveland (Tenn.) Speedway; Fort Payne (Ala.) Motor Speedway; and Boyd’s Speedway in Ringgold, Ga.

The next series race is set for April 11 at North Georgia Speedway in Chatsworth, Ga. The series will return to Duck River Raceway on Sept. 26 for the 11th of the 12 scheduled events.

After a wet week leading up to Saturday’s race and a chilly forecast of the weekend, Duck River owner and promoter Bob Harris was thankful the show was completed and happy for one of the biggest fields of Late Models the speedway has ever hosted.

“I know the track was not perfect like I want, and I am still learning something new every week with this dirt thing,” said Harris via his Facebook page. “I want to thank everyone … racers, fans, staff … that makes Duck River Raceway Park the place to be on Saturday night. I hope all had a great time and (I) was very proud to meet and see all the new faces.”

After a regular show featuring all divisions including Super Late Models this Saturday night, Duck River Raceway Park will welcome the World of Outlaws Late Models traveling series for a $10,000-to-win Super Late Model main event on Friday, April 10.
