LYNCHBURG, Tenn. — More than 1,250 runners converged on the Lynchburg square on Saturday for the sixth annual Oak Barrel Half Marathon. The 13.1-mile trek through scenic Moore County drew a record number of participants as the event put on by the Mach Tenn Running Club and sponsored by Jack Daniel’s continues to grow each year.
Josh Whitehead, 36, of Madison, Ala., was the overall winner, completing the course at the 1:11:14 mark to set a new event record. Whitehead’s time eclipsed the old record of 1:13:01 set in 2012 by Tullahoma’s Brad Chronister.
Tullahoma’s Eric Nelius, 19, returned to record another outstanding finish. The former Tullahoma High School distance runner came in at 1:19:54 to place second, one spot better than his third-place finish from a year ago.
Marina Scheithauer, of Murfreesboro, was the top female finisher. The 33-year-old ran an outstanding race and finished at the 1:30:53 mark, which was also good enough for 13th overall.
