Among the earliest settlers of Marion County, Illinois, were members of the Smith family. Solomon and Martha ‘Patsy’ Smith settled near Iuka in 1829 after leaving Spartanburg County, S.C. Solomon was the first Justice of the Peace. Martha was the daughter of Thomas and Sarah Farrow Miles. Both are buried at the Stringtown – McGuire Cemetery.
While some of their children remained in Tennessee, several went to southern Illinois or moved on to Missouri and Kansas. Sons Chaney and William Smith resided at Lynchburg, Tenn.
