More than 1,200 compete in 7th annual Oak Barrel Half marathon

LYNCHBURG, Tenn. — Nearly 1,300 runners made their way to Lynchburg on Saturday for the seventh annual Oak Barrel Half Marathon.

Competitors from 27 states — including Tennessee, Alabama, Kentucky, Oklahoma, Missouri, North Carolina, Georgia, South Carolina, California, Texas, Wisconsin, Arkansas, Michigan, Mississippi, Illinois, New York, Arizona, Florida, Indiana, Virginia, Maryland, Iowa, New Hampshire, Ohio, Louisiana, Pennsylvania and Colorado — converged upon Moore County to compete in the annual event that has experienced tremendous growth since its inception.

The annual event helps raise money for both local and area-wide charities and non-profits each year.

Josh Whitehead, 37, of Madison, Ala., won the race. He finished with an overall time of 1 hour, 13 minutes and 23 seconds. Whitehead finished five minutes ahead of runner up Eric Nelius. Nelius, of Knoxville, is a Tullahoma native and former Tullahoma High School distance runner. His overall mark was 1:18:30.

Eric Spraggins (1:21:05) of Owensboro, Ky, was third, while Jason Reneau (1:21:58), of Madison, Ala., was fourth. Eric Waterman (1:23:49), of Cane Ridge, Tenn., completed the top 10.

Julia Mateskon was the top finishing female runner at the 1:35:35 mark. The 31-year-old Madison, Ala., runner placed 26th overall.

Every runner finishing in the top 12 had a pace of under 7 minutes per mile.

The top finishing runner from Lynchburg was Lucas Miller. Miller, 23, completed the race at the 1:40:36 mark and was 56th overall. With a pace of 7:41 per mile, Miller placed third in his age group (Male 21 to 24).

Of the 1,292 runners registered, 20 listed Lynchburg as their home.

Following Miller it was Jeffrey Prince Jr. (129th); Melissa Prince (192); Dorie Lund (288); Mark Miller (410); Sarah Sanders (416); Kayla Matlock (469); Chris Branch (497); Cortney Thomas (531); Jay Melcher (552); Nell Green (621); Sharon Thomas (753); Rita Logan (785); Laura Hornaday (794); Ann Barncard (936); Brian Smith (1049); Rhonda Gregory (1122); Terry Gregory (1146); Kristin Luke (1241) and Angie Roach (1269).

Editor’s note: A number of runners listed surrounding areas such as Mulberry, Wartrace, Fayetteville, Shelbyville, Tullahoma and Winchester as their address, though they could be from Moore County. The finishers listed below were specifically listed as Lynchburg residents.
