The Westwood Middle School Rockets defeated Moore County Middle School 16-12 last Thursday at Raider Stadium.
Westwood got on the board first with a running touchdown late in the first period. With 1:28 to play in the first quarter, they converted the two point try to pull ahead 8-0.
In the second quarter, the Raiders and the Rockets traded turnovers. With just seven seconds left on the clock until halftime, MCMS’s Nate Love got into the end zone to send the Raiders in the locker room trailing by just two points, 8-6.
The third quarter Raider drive stalled and Moore County turned over the ball to Westwood on downs at the 5:21 mark. Westwood answered by marching systematically down the field in a long series that culminated in a Rocket touchdown and two-point conversion.
With 34 seconds remaining in the third, Westwood led 16-6.
The Raiders returned the favor by eating up most of the fourth quarter in a single drive.
They converted two consecutive first downs to get within striking distance. After being pulled down in the back field for a loss, Moore County’s Issac Holt hit the outside corner and sped into the end zone to pull the Raiders within four – 16-12 with less than two minutes left on the clock.
An onsides kick attempt fell short and time ran out. The final score was Westwood 16, Moore County 12.
