Metro Council votes to put sales tax increase on ballot

Posted on Wednesday, May 23, 2012 at 11:25 am

The Metro Council voted Monday night to place a local option sales tax increase of .25 percent on the November ballot for voter approval in the form of a referendum.

The measure would raise the local rate from 2.5 percent to 2.75 percent and raise the total Moore County sales tax from 9.5 percent to 9.75 percent, which is the state maximum.

The sales tax is a combination of the state rate (7 percent) plus the local option sales tax, which varies from county to county from 1 percent to 2.75 percent.
