The family of Garrett Long plans a second annual memorial blood drive for Wednesday, June 20 at the Lynchburg First United Methodist Church from 3-7:30 p.m.
Garrett, the infant son of Shannon and Laura Long, died due to delivery complications on June 19, 2010. During the procedure, Laura required large quantities of blood in order to make a full recovery.
“You just don’t know when you’re going to need it,” Laura says.
Laura says family members developed the memorial blood drive to honor Garrett’s memory. The date was chosen to not only honor his birthday but also to add blood supplies prior to the July 4 weekend.
“I wanted to turn it into something good,” she says.
The Longs have partnered with Blood Assurance for the event. Blood Assurance provides blood to all the regional hospitals surrounding Moore County including Harton Hospital, Southern Middle Tennessee Medical Center, United Regional Medical Center, Medical Center of Manchester and Lincoln County Medical Center.
They’ve set a goal of 30 donations for the event.
