The Moore County Middle School Raiders basketball team is headed to the state Final Four.
The Raiders took down Smith County 53-41 Thursday night at Lincoln County High School to win the sectionals and move on to the state semifinals. They will face a yet-to-be-determined opponent on Friday, Feb. 14, at Stewarts Creek in Smyrna.
Sectional Most Valuable Player Alex Copeland scored 23 points to lead the Raiders, who jumped out front and held off Smith County. They led 33-20 at halftime after getting off to a 20-12 lead after one period. Copeland scored 10 points in the opening quarter to set the pace.
The Raiders led 46-29 heading into the final quarter and withstood a fourth-quarter push by Smith to take the 12-point win and capture the sectional championship.
After Copeland’s 23, Logan Hegwood added nine points, Wesley Clifton seven, Keller Morey six, Will Parker four and Brett Dobbs and Peyton Hill added two apiece.
Joining Copeland on the all-sectional team were Morey and Dobbs.
