Emily Powell’s decision to join the Moore County High School golf team this season turned out to be a pretty good one for the Raiderettes sophomore. Powell carded a 127 on Tuesday at the Legacy Golf Course in Springfield in the district tournament to earn a berth in next week’s regional.
Powell is the lone MCHS golfer — boy or girl — who managed to advance. She did so in part to a solid score on her first nine holes. Powell fired a 59 heading out, which turned out to be the fifth lowest score going out. She struggled with a 68 on the nine holes heading back to the clubhouse, but her 127 was still low enough to get her into Monday’s regional, which will be played at Champions Run in Shelbyville.
“We were about to leave when the lady (began to announce) team scores. When she announced Emily’s name … her face, she was just so excited,” said first-year MCHS golf coach Brooke Lindsey. “This will make her work harder for next year.”
The top three teams automatically qualify for the region tournament. Officials then take the next five individuals who are not on a qualifying team. Powell was fifth among those at-large entrants.
