Wofford, Leon Daniel Jr., 85, of Lynchburg, passed away Wednesday, Feb. 12, 2014 at Saint Thomas at Rutherford Hospital in Murfreesboro, Tenn. Leon was born on Feb. 5, 1929 in Atlanta, to Mattie Belle Brooks Wofford and Leon Daniel Wofford, Sr. He graduated from Calvin Coolidge High School in Washington, D.C. in 1947. He then received his Bachelor’s Degree from the University of Texas at Austin at the Cockrell School of Engineering in 1952. He married Elin Sveindis Haraldsdottir of Reykjavik, Iceland, on Sept. 10, 1955 with a lavish ceremony at the Washington Cathedral in D.C. In 1956, he graduated with his Juris Doctorate from George Washington University Law School. Shortly thereafter, he and Elin moved to Huntsville, Ala., after Leon accepted a position as a Patent Attorney for NASA at the George C. Marshall Space Flight Center. Leon was a loving father, grandfather, great-grandfather and friend who loved to read, especially about Civil War history and science technology. Preceding him in death include his parents, Mattie Belle and Leon Daniel Wofford, Sr., and a daughter, Sandra Lee Wofford. He is survived by his wife, Elin Wofford; his sister, Iris Wofford Berry Carper; and five children, Sonya (Whit) Henderson, Kristin (John) Daniel, Dana (Tim) Green, Kathryn Wofford and Daniel Leon Wofford; surviving grandchildren include Whitney (Kevin) Raque, Matt Henderson, Dillon Henderson, Ryan (Cinda) Daniel, Jordan Daniel, Lee Corder, Eric Corder, Holly (Justin) Langford, Suzie (Brent) Thornton, Lee Rogers, Ross (Lindsey) Rogers and Olivia Wofford; surviving great-grandchildren include Ariel Daniel, Ari Daniel, Lillian Corder, Case Corder, Cayla Corder, Kylie Langford, Kendall Langford, Jasper Langford, Nila Thornton and Weston Thornton. Visitation was held at Lynchburg Funeral Home on Tuesday, Feb., 18, with funeral services following at noon. Burial followed in the Lynchburg Cemetery.
