HOSA fundraiser bringing Lip Sync Battle to the MCHS stage

It can only be described as an “As Seen on Television Event.” And it’s happening Saturday, May 16 at Moore County High School. Moore County’s very own Lip Sync Battle, hosted by the school’s HOSA program will go down in the MCHS gymnasium.  The “battle” is a fundraiser as the HOSA club works to raise funds to send those members who qualified for the national conference to their event in California.

“We are depending on it as a big fundraiser for our trip to Nationals,” said HOSA sponsor and MCHS teacher Missy Smedley.

Late Night with Jimmy Fallon host Jimmy Fallon made the Lip Sync battles legendary — just check out a few of the YouTube videos for more evidence. Now what once was a regular skit on his show has its own spinoff.

Legendary rapper-turned-television star LL Cool J hosts “Lip Sync Battle” along with model Chrissy Teigen Thursdays on Spike TV. The game pits two celebrities against each other in a lip syncing battle for two rounds with the crowd determining the winner of the battle after the two rounds have been completed.

Smedley hopes the community will join in on the fun and help her students get to California, where they will represent the school, county and state, in the respective HOSA events. And anyone who knows Smedley knows that it’s usually go big or go home.

“I envision it being a whole community, family event,” she says. “I have started promoting it on Facebook and Twitter. I have some people committed to performing … Coach (Lavon) King, Brenda Dye, the Smedley family and some students basketball girls and softball girls.”

The night begins at 6 p.m. at the MCHS gym. It costs $5 for an individual to enter the contest and $10 for a group of up to 10 members. Smedley said the songs, performance and costumes must be family friendly for all ages. The winners will be chosen by audience applause based on lip sync ability, creativity and stage presence/choreography.

“The community is encouraged to participate … church groups, book clubs, sports teams, co-workers, friends, families, etc.,” added Smedley.

Admission to the event is $5 and concessions will be available.
