Council seeks nominations for vacant seats

Posted on Thursday, September 20, 2012 at 12:30 pm

New Metro Council member David Boyce (far left) listens as his fellow Council members R.D. McKenzie, Linda Wolaver, Penny Smith and Gordon Millsaps and Metro Mayor Sloan Stewart look on. Boyce represents the Fourth District. A second vacant Fourth District seat as well as two vacant First District seats will be filled at next month’s meeting.

The Metro Council seeks nominations for members to fill three vacant seats: two in District 1 and one in District 4.
The Council will vote on filling the vacancies during their Oct. 15 meeting. Interested parties must reside within the first or fourth districts respectively and have been a resident of Moore County for at least one year. Candidates must also be a registered voter in Moore County.

The winning candidates must receive a simple majority, which is a minimum of seven votes of the existing Council.
Usually members need a majority of eight votes but since there are only 12 sitting members, that majority reduces to seven votes.

Should no candidate receive a majority vote in the first round, the lowest candidate(s) will be dropped through each successive round until a majority is received.

Candidates will need a nomination from an existing council member to be considered.
