Community chips in for baseball field project

Posted on Thursday, April 25, 2013 at 2:55 pm

I find it comforting to live in a community that has so much civic pride. I recently embarked on a project to upgrade the middle school baseball field in the new park complex by providing a sod infield that would allow us to compete with other division schools.

I wanted to let Coach (Darren) James know that the community would back him with a field he could be proud of. I invited Coach to breakfast at the Iron Kettle to meet the Coffee Club members and before the day was over we had collected $1,600 to purchase the sod.

We also had volunteers to prepare the field and to lay the sod, who wanted to remain anonymous. Without their help we could not have completed the project. The following is a list of folks that contributed to the project.

Charles Johnston of Monster Broadband; Howard Kirksey of Lynchburg LPD Bank; Terry Gregory of Robertson, Worsham, Gregory, & Giffin Law Firm; Jim and Mary Lou Apple; Mr. & Mrs. David Parks; Mr. Sloan Stewart; Mr. Buford Jennings; Mr. & Mrs. Terry Gregory; Mr. & Mrs. Jim Keller; Mr. & Mrs. Don Spencer; Mr. & Mrs. Larry Moorehead; Mr. & Mrs. Doug Sanders; Mr. & Mrs. Earl Amacher; Mr. & Mrs. Tom Brown; and Mr. & Mrs. Dudley Tipps.

We actually completed the project on Saturday, April 20. A big thank you to all involved. Coach James is really pleased with the outcome. I’m sure that he has many other project wishes; if anyone is interested just give him a call.
