Nunamaker, Amanda Anne Waggoner, 78. Graveside services officiated by Rev. Ricky Lee and inurnment of cremains will be held on Monday, Oct. 7, 2013 at 11 a.m. in Lynchburg Cemetery for Amanda Anne Waggoner Nunamaker, who passed away in College Park, Md., on April 10, 2013, after a three-year battle with cancer. Dr. Nunamaker was born on June 17, 1934, the daughter of the late Lemuel Augustus Waggoner and Hattie Margaret Sory Waggoner. She spent her formative years in Winchester and Murfreesboro and earned Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees from Middle Tennessee State University. She taught English and journalism in public schools in Michigan, Florida and Ohio. She also served as a reporter for the Nashville Tennessean. After receiving a Ph.D. degree from George Peabody College of Vanderbilt University, Dr. Nunamaker taught journalism at the University of Maryland, and later at Howard University from 1983 until her retirement. Dr. Nunamaker served as president of the Washington, D.C., and Maryland professional chapters of the Society of Professional Journalists. She is survived by numerous first and second cousins and a circle of devoted friends. Jennings Moore-Cortner Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.
