Merritt, Alice S., 78, of Winchester, passed away Saturday, June 29, 2013, at Southern Tennessee Medical Center in Winchester. She was born December 21, 1934 in Estillfork, Ala., the daughter of the late Lewis W. and Clara (Sims) Sanders. She was a member of the Bethel United Methodist Church, the Belvidere and the Franklin County Home Demonstration Club and the National Association of Retired Federal Employees. She worked at the ASCS office until her retirement in 1980 and was a co-owner of the Merritt Mobile Village. Mrs. Merritt was preceded in death by her sister Dortha ‘Dot’ Sanders Cowser; brother-in-law John A. Cowser, Jr.; brother L.C. ‘Buster’ Sanders; and sister-in-law Mildred Sanders. She is survived by her husband, Bob Merritt; daughter Donna (David) Pickett, of Winchester; grandchildren John (Abby) Pickett, Joey Pickett and Clair Pickett; great-grandchildren Trenton, Nolan and Tessa Pickett; brother and sister-in-law, Jane and Wayne Tucker; nieces Darla Tucker (Mike) Bishop and Linda Cowser (Jeff) Bryner; nephew Jason Tucker; and great-nieces Julie Brown Bryner, Lauren Bryner, Emily Bishop and Aubry Bishop. Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, July 2 in the Moore-Cortner Chapel with the Rev. J. D. Spencer officiating. Interment followed in Franklin Memorial Gardens in Winchester. At her request, Mrs. Merritt will be carried to the cemetery in a horse drawn hearse pulled by her own mules. Serving as pallbearers are Joey Pickett, John Pickett, Jeff Bryner, Jason Tucker, Mike Bishop and Harold Anderson.
