One of the stops on 2017 MCHS senior trip was a visit to The United States Marine Corps War Memorial (Iwo Jima Memorial) Dedicated 1954, it is located near the OrdWeitzel Gate to Arlington National Cemetery and is dedicated to U.S. Marines who died in the defense of the United States since 1775. The memorial was inspired by the iconic 1945 photograph of six Marines raising a U.S. flag atop Mount Suribachi during the Battle of Iwo Jima in World War II. The senior’s trip to Washington D.C. and New York City departed on the long bus ride Sunday, April 2. They returned the following Saturday April 8 around 2:00 am. The senior trip has been a tradition for several years but the year of the very first excursion is uncertain. “I went on the trip when I was in school, and my dad went in the 70s, but it goes back farther than that,” Jana Brown, one of the three senior sponsors said. The group toured the Smithsonian museums and Arlington Cemetery in Washington D.C. The tour continued to New York where the group enjoyed Radio City Music Hall and went to a Broadway show. On the way home the group stopped in Hershey, Pennsylvania to see “the sweetest place on earth”.
