The Job of Mother comes without instruction

Accentuate The Positive

By June Pugh

If someone calls you “Mother,” you have been blessed with one of life’s most rewarding and challenging careers. Yet it does not come with instructions. In this on-going job of “mothering,” I have used trial and error, a lot of prayer, and I have tried to apply bits of wisdom accumulated along the way. Sunday school teachers taught that Jesus loves me. I wanted my children to also know that they are God’s special children. My mother advised me to choose wisely the man I would marry. For her, being a wife and mother was a lifetime commitment. She taught, by example, that the greatest gift I could give my children would be to love, honor, encourage and support their father. From my dad I learned to be proud of who I am, to always strive for new goals and to encourage my children to do the same. A pediatrician urged me to teach my children that all behaviors have consequences. A nurse counseled that a good mother is not someone to lean on, but someone who helps make leaning unnecessary. I learned from a coach that children rise to meet expectations when they are given direction, encouragement and appreciation. Through observing evil in the world, I learned that “no” is sometimes the best answer to give to a child and that “because I said so” is often reason enough. Others will judge how well I learned my lessons. God knows all of my many mistakes and regrets. In spite of my failings, I am blessed that two fine young women have made me proud to be their “Mom.” Positive Word: “I have been reminded of your sincere faith, which first lived in your grandmother Lois and in your mother Eunice and, I am persuaded, now lives in you also” (2 Timothy 1:5). Positive Walk: This week, send a note to at least one Mother or Grandmother who is bringing a child to Sunday school and church. Tell them that you understand this is not an easy task, confirm that they, the child and the church will reap the benefits. Tell them how proud you are of them. Pray for this
